During my trek into work this morning I had three goals in mind for my day:

1. Keep dress from flying above one's waist while braving the seemingly tornado like weather this day.

3. Listen to Etta James faithfully until I can't help but shake it in my seat.

I'm fairly certain these goals, if attained, will provide joy and happiness to my otherwise predictable boring day. . .

10 Day Health Challenge...

Good afternoon and Happy Wednesday, ya'll!

2 days ago I agreed to participate in a health challenge for the duration of 10 days.

This will range from physical to mental to emotional health beneficial exercises and so far I'm enjoying my end of the agreement.

Day 1 (yesterday):

Make a list of everything you are grateful for in your life. Think about how each item impacts your life positively.

Our health is not just a physical matter. When we have a positive outlook on life we tend to make better decisions for our health.

This challenge fell into my inbox just in time to curve my day away from the morning's beginning feelings of negativity and irritation to a more content, humble light.

I've decided to carry this challenge on to a daily routine.

I commit to making the [small] effort of acknowledging at least 5 things daily that I am grateful for.

Because [my] life is good.

And not only should I never complain for the petty things that seem to catch my tone too often, I should make it a point to swing into positive territories and make certain that I do not take the great things I have in life for granted.

Starting now. . .

Today I am grateful for:

1. Wednesday night group run with the Dear One & the 'Fit Friends'.

2. Happy thoughts of a dear brother and a handsome nephew who celebrate a shared birthday this day!

3. Sweet love notes that show up often in school bags/lunch sacks/laptops. . .

4. Cool crisp Spring-like fresh air - ahhhh

5. New -FREE- music downloads from NYLON (see goodness below)

Happy Wednesday's start with lovely coworkers informing you that they're putting a "surprise" on your desk - And instead of finding what you suspect might be a stack of files to scan, you happen upon a tiny [spectacular] can of purple Play-Doh.

Happiness ensues immediately.

And despite whatever chaos might occurr around you during the premature hours of your work day, a perpetual smile shall be fastened on your face for the remaining hours of the [sunshiny] day.

I'm thinking a pony mold or a small plate of pasta creation is in order . . .

I can't believe it's March already-

Happy New Year, by the way...

2011 is rolling along nicely and has been graced mostly with ski time adventures, school, work, running with the pups, and loving on The Dear One.

The sunshine is waking quickly from its winter nap and after months of begging and pleading with the universe to change its routine, I'm certainly happy to welcome it back into my life.

What else...
I got my hands on a tambourine last week and am pretty sure I've found my life calling -

Seriously.

In other news,

The Dear One and I (and friend) created a pulk this weekend -

We plan to pile it with fire wood & water and, with packs on our backs and snow shoes on our feet, drag it 7 miles through Resurrection Pass to camp in a cabin in Caribou Creek.

The Facebook fix is certainly no fix at all*--

I want to RSVP "YES" to Brody's birthday celebration this weekend.

I want to hug my dad and brother and sister for completing the Portland Marathon this past weekend.

I want to flick Billy in the nose for not keeping in better contact with me.

I want to eat fro yo 6 times a day a laugh like a maniac with the fanciest of the friends.

I'd like a good dance-a-thon at W.

I want to tell Grammy a joke and then talk about how hot she looks.

I'd certainly like to meet my little niece who's swiftly turning into a real life little girl--

Then I'd like to kidnap Kaiya bug and hang out with her for a week.

Not to mention the little nephew gents who I hardly even know--

Plus, sister and me could really use a good wine/cheese/chat night.

And I'm pretty sure Frannie-B and me are long past due on our tea party.

The SLC Weekly...Jade Market in all its glory...Special lunch dates at Caputo's (other mother)...aww I miss it all.

I suppose after a year and four months away--they're scheduled to get the best of me.

At least for this day.

Monday Morning Thoughts...

You know those dazzling little moments in life where you feel your present views beginning to shift a bit - Perhaps a glimpse of clarity sets in and things begin to feel a bit more substantial?

The moments where you have the sudden urge to take on more- live bigger- and make a larger dent in the big picture of life as you know it?

I think it comes with age - for me at least.

And such moments are becoming quite apparent in numerous areas as of late.

The 'shift' in my desires-

The goals I choose to incorporate-

My insides seem to be urging me to alter my 'life plan' in such a way that holds a much different story that was mapped out a year ago-

Exciting, albeit confusing...

But welcomed in full.

Such is life-

And growth.

And becoming... me.

Additionally, the darkness up here is beginning to settle in - swiftly welcoming the Winter months...

Because when the quaking began, all I could manage to do was make a weird noise and stare at my co-worker as if to silently ask her to please make it stop...or hug me.

After which I immediately called lover to make sure he knew that I was the most scared girl with shaky hands.

And he did.

I'm not scared anymore.

It's a real good time!

*A blanket is created for the first born child in each coworkers family.

So creative minds blend to create a pattern, complete with shapes/colors that fit together to make pretty soft baby things. Each participant receives an individual shape with assigned dimensions/color.

And they all get bound together when complete to create one solid/washable baby blanket.

Snowbird Hut Fundraiser - Saturday...

This event, held at the Alaska Rock Gym, is suspect to being a great amount of entertaining fun-

The company - the food - the beer - the music -

Michael Thompson (a delightful and extremely talented coworker of mine) has donated much time to designing a new shelter which will replace the currently standing, yet slowly diminishing, original with the purpose of providing adequate shelter for back country activity.

As with most ambitious projects, funds are needed in order to complete this new development (already in progress) and all proceeds from Saturday's fundraiser will go towards such a cause.

I'd like to preface this conversation we're about to have, dear reader....

...With the fact that the following admission of my actions is not my fault, but due to the fact that I'm currently undergoing an ungodly lady time of the month and I am entitled to treat those around me as terrible as I feel...

Just so you know.

With that...I tell you my story:

I may or may not have been angry for 2 1/2 days now.

And unbeknownst to the dear one

(until 9 a.m. this morning because after giving him the silent treatment for said 2 1/2 days, I disclosed the news to him via [feisty] text message),

it is fully HIS FAULT.

I assure you.

So now he knows it.

And I felt much better. Until 5 seconds after I sent the message when I didn't; but rather, I felt silly and horribly achey inside for writing such mean things in such a rash moment while anger was* a flowing...

I should also make clear that these feelings were brought to life because of something I found out he did 2 years ago.

That's right you heard me-- 2 years.

Rational right?

So my feelings are hurt- and justifiably so...don't you think?

And I decide to confide in my boss the fact that I'm exhausted thinking about how I now have to go home and apologize for being ridiculous and not expressing my feelings appropriately but via text message while he's at work.

This is how it goes...

BOSS: "Oh...you're one of 'those' huh? [insert her undisclosed boyfriend's name here] is like that too-- he'll sometimes say out of the blue, 'you know, I was REALLY mad at you last week for blah blah blah' and I'm like, 'what? really? I had no idea--why didn't you just say so?' Because I'm the type of person who will just scream and scream and scream at you if I'm mad even if you say sorry 16 times I don't care- you're going to know I'm mad. But when [boyfriend] gets mad at me, he will just go into the bedroom and lock me out and not speak to me until he feels like it."

ME: "OK, yes--that's totally me. I won't tell you a thing, even if you ask what's wrong, but will hate you on the inside until I decide I'm ready- and then I'll use my digital courage to text message you as much! And now I have to go home and say I'm sorry for being mad."

BOSS: "NO! NO! NO! You do not do that. You go to him and say that what he did really hurt your feelings- and even if it did happen 2 years ago, he shouldn't have done that and he should say he's sorry and make it up to you. Got it?

ME: "Got it, but..."

BOSS: "And then you start bawling your head off and tell him that you are so upset and your feelings are just so hurt and you need him to buy you new shoes to make you feel better. And then even after you get new shoes you have to tell him that you're still not sure you are happy yet and then you'll probably get a bigger present..."

ME: [can't speak-laughing so hard-tears rolling down cheeks].

BOSS: "What are you laughing for? I don't understand what is so funny. When [boyfriend] upsets me, he just gives me his credit card to make right- that's just what you do! Did you get all that?"

--Male coworker enters the room---

HIM: "Are you ladies talking about when your gents piss you off? I've learned to just immediately say I'm sorry and buy my wife a gift. We have a contract binding us to this agreement. She got a BMW last week because of it."

BOSS: "See, Chelsie? Exactly."

ME: "Oh man...I did not know about this present rule. I've been doing it all wrong and now I'm even angrier than I started out..."

*please don't misunderstand my past tense...I am STILL mad.

Once upon a time [5 days ago]-

A girl and a boy met up on a glorious sunny day for their routine lunch date.

The girl and the boy strolled down the street looking curiously for something tasty to eat-

But then, something unexpected happened upon them...

They spotted this place.

With beauty spilling out of the welcoming front windows, they just had to go inside and check out all of the wonders.

And wondrous everything was.

Attention couldn't be kept on any one item for more than a moment as the next magical piece of organically constructed gem would too quickly catch the eye-

On to the bracelet- the necklace- the shirt- the skirt- the wallet-

THE HAT.

The girl stared at the pile of beautifully hand-stitched patterns.

The most perfectly charming pile she'd ever seen.

She knew, immediately- it was love.

But only for the one...

Confirmed by the hugging of the hat to her head,

Paired with the blessings of approval from Ms. hat peddler-

And more importantly from the boy...

She just knew she must own this hat-

With warmth in her heart and enough pennies in her pocket book-

She decided it would be hers.

While the boy encouraged the girl to embrace her new love-

The girl couldn't help but acknowledge she had a minor shopping problem and better spend the afternoon contemplating on whether this was true love, or perhaps just an afternoon fling that would soon go unnoticed.

The girl and the boy left the store-

Kissed goodbye-

And parted ways to complete the work day.

It didn't take long for the girl to realize what a mistake she had made by leaving the hat all alone- risking the chance of it being swiped up by an eager passerby.

So the next day she went back.

She rushed down the street- determined and anxious-

Flinging open the front door of the new found boutique...

Only to find the unspeakable--

It was gone.

No longer.

She sifted through the pile.

A few other lovely gems tried to convince her of their fate-

But she knew it was wrong.

Her hat was gone.

The girl hung her head and walked out of the store.

She called to tell the boy of the tragedy-

He sympathized with her troubled tone.

A kind boy.

She ventured home feeling disheveled.

Upon her arrival, she quickly went upstairs to fetch the pups who anxiously awaited her homecoming-

Her jaw dropped and her heart fluttered--

They were not alone--they waited with a hat-

the hat.

And a love note.

Because the boy loved the girl and wanted the girl to smile.

And she did.

And the girl fell in love with the hat-

And even more so with the kind boy.

And the girl and the boy and the pups and the hat

lived happily ever after.

Happy 'I've Lived in Alaska for 1 Year and 2 Days' Day...

One year and 2 days ago...

I packed my bags and hopped on an airplane-

Nervous by the thoughts of abandoning all I knew my life to be, but overwhelmed by the joy of knowing I would [after the longest 5 hour flight of my lifetime]-

be greeted by the most handsome gentleman I'd ever set my eyes on.

It didn't take long to know-

That I had, most certainly, made the BEST decision of my life-

I am completely smothered in happiness on a daily basis that most of the time I'm not sure I'm deserving of-

But life is suddenly so much sweeter-

And I am forever thankful.

Cheers to the first of what I know will be many years spent with The Dear One, the glorious pups, and this amazing land of the midnight sun.

Ahhh...Spring has finally arrived and I have officially [successfully] made it through my first Alaskan Winter. With ease--if I do say so myself.

Skiing helped, along with the small doses of sunlight adding up each day...a fun way to countdown (or up) to the hopeful moments when it might decide to stick around for the majority of an entire day.

GOD BLESS SUNLIGHT.

We ski'd our last run last weekend.

Albeit sticky-crunchy-slow going- hard to push through-snow beneath our skis, we did it.

With soar unfamiliar quad muscle aches to follow.

Skiing in May-- I love Alaska.

Back to the Kenai this weekend with the dear one, some glorious friends, and a pack of very excited pups.

I can't wait.

Firstly-

We have decided to incorporate yoga into our little lives and have begun doing so with some classes HERE.

First class was a success and we're excited to follow up on our new hobby tomorrow evening.

Second-

Dan Savage came up to the last frontier last week and we had the pleasure to listen to him speak of relationships/sex/life/sex/etc. for an hour and a half.

If you've never read/listened to the man-- do it*.

Despite the (ongoing?) Savage/Utah Feud--

I maintain this man is genius.

I'm just sayin'.

Last but [most certainly] not least-

I am now the proud owner of the most lovely new pair of Volkl skis.

They treated me well last weekend at THIS fine venue; but just to be sure, we better test them out again this weekend HERE.

Oh and I forgot to tell you that after my second ski lesson a few weeks ago- I was able to get off the 'bunny hill' and hang out with the big kids for the day...

So joyous.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be incorporating some backflips into my runs this weekend**-

Battle of the Boots...

We've been hiking/backpacking/camping a lot up here over the past several months.

All through the summer we sporadically picked up several pairs of boots for me to try on-

Wear around the house/yard/beginning of _______ trail head--

Only to [immediately] switch back to my less than superb trail runner shoes because even they felt better than the piercing grasp of 'regular people' hiking boots.

Something is significantly wrong with my feet.

I first figured this out when I had a major panic attack the first time I [halfway] slipped on a snowboarding boot.

Foot flailing- me yelping- kicking- twisting body side to side-

Panic attack.

Because my feet were squished. And pissed.

So I've been frustrated with insufficient foot gear conducive to outdoor activities for like a hundred years.

But alas-- I have found my match...

Meet my new [most favorite] hiking shoes!

They are Oboz.

They got a trial run last weekend and it's official.

I'm in love with them.

The traction is incredible and they are cozy and gentle on my sensitive tootsies.

Plus- the box I brought them home in informed me that for purchasing said shoes, they'd in turn plant a tree in my honor.

Perhaps to compensate for the waste of the box in which this glorified statement was announced...

Oh well- hooray for new trees.

And shoes.

Waiting [impatiently] for 2 perfectly useless decaf espresso shots to dive on in...

Causing the thermometer to hastily climb past the wretchedly scalding temperature of 180+ degrees for the crazy person who requested her "extra hot latte".

Except the perfectly useless espresso doesn't quite make the cut-

Because mid-pour, your stupid hand slips and now you're wearing boiling [god-awfully-stinky] spilled milk.

All over your:

hands/arms...shirt...pants...brand new sensible golashes.

Then you can cry.

You can cry (and pout) as long as you want.

Because aside from your bubbling skin, stinkified/wet clothing and the crazy lady continuing to just stare at you impatiently--

You'll feel better.

I've been thinking a lot of the things in my little life that I am quite thankful for.

(along with the friends feast planned and a four day weekend...)

With these thoughts comes a feeling of great love and satisfaction for where I'm at- in this particular moment in time, and the people I'm sharing my life with.

[a satisfaction exceeding even the occasional seemingly hard day paired with the thermometers constant reminder that it is negative (blank) degrees outside...]

And while I miss numerous loved ones who reside thousands of miles from me-

I can't seem to embrace this newfangled concept called

the onset of my first Alaska Winter--

It's 40 degrees outside right now.

And raining.

Additionally--[while I'm lamenting],

I'd like to take this time to thank NPR for recurrently emphasizing- [every 15-17 minutes] that we are losing over 5 minutes of sunlight per day.

And furthermore that it has, in fact, already snowed here*--

Twice.

Remember how it's September still?

And remember how my side of the closet filled with sensible sun dresses and strappy huarache sandals that continuously laugh in my bewildered face on a daily basis--

Reminding me that there's an incredibly good chance that I may or may not survive through the predictably ungodly forthcoming 9 months of dark-cold-frostbiting-outside forbidding weather..

Now I know I've been reporting nothing but love for the life in the last frontier, and don't get me wrong--I'm grasping to that love for dear life-

But what I'm getting at is--

I'm frightened for what's to come.

I'm just not sure me and my opaque tights/dress/scarf/sensible boot** combo are going to make it through this winter alive.

I'm just saying.

Wish me luck.

p.s. I'll be carrying a beacon with me on a regular basis.

Just in case.

*Only in the mountains, mind you--but it's creeping down slowly.

And in case I haven't made my point yet, I'm not terribly excited about said event.

I Forgot to Tell You About Our Adventures in Whittier...

On Labor Day, after the Dear One and I stopped here,

We decided to head into Whittier from Portage for the [rain filled] day to explore the tiny little town.

It's comprised of about 19 square miles (that's land & water combined), about 180 people, a delightful boat filled harbor & a VERY small selection of eateries.

To get to the town you have to pay a toll & drive through a 2.5 mile one-way tunnel- which runs on a very specific car/train schedule. at the bottom of the mountain--

The inside was pretty rugged and very amazing.

Unofficially named [by me] the Tunnel of Death.

This is the entrance on the way in--

And on the way out...

This is The Buckner Building- which is an old [very creepy] government building which, at one point, served as housing/shops/eateries/etc. for those living in Whittier--

All under one roof.

It's now abandoned and filled with a good amount of spray paint, asbestos and [I think] ghosts...So we just explored the outside junkyard treasures...

Then we walked around the harbor window shopping for which boat might be appropriate for future life on the sea.

Not kidding-

The Dear One picked this one...

And I picked this gorgeous gem...

Just a little diy boat fixing and she'll be good to go in no time!

Our adventure came to a close with some Red Seafood Chowder & delicious Yellow-eye Rock Fish* & chips cooked up at this delightful little sea side eatery.

Twas a glorious outing, indeed.

*Most amazingly delicious tasting fish.

This week--

The Dear One and I have spent our time laying about...

[coughing-aching-sneezing-freezing-sweating-snotting-whining]

Alternating rubbing each others sore backs/feet/necks/arms/legs...

Running one another hot bubble baths to be accompanied by candles and story telling-

Back to back movie marathons-

Indian/Thai/Italian take out food-

Taking turns reading one another the magical works of David Sedaris-

Napping. Lots and lots of napping-

Breathless nights followed by a trip to the local Instacare-

Indulging in multiple over-the-counter cold/flu remedies i.e. Tylenol/Sudafed/etc., Emergen-C drinks, tissues galore, chamomile & Breathe Easy tea, 'grandma mush', Vicks Vapor Rub, the penguin air purifier, respiratory inhalers every 4-6 hours for The Dear One, & 'get-better-us- apple pie'.

All the while partaking in mass amounts of laughter.

Wheezy congested laughter.

(followed, of course, by flemified coughing spells...mmmm)

Turns out, sick days aren't so bad after all--

When accompanied by this gem of a gent, that is.

Bring it on stupid colds.

You've got nothing on us!*

Disclosure statement--It has been suspected that I am, in fact, the one who consumed this household with terrible sickly germs...but I'm not sure that can be proven, really-

Unless you want to get technical in the fact that perhaps I may or may not have noticed the symptoms of said terrible cold/flu a moment** before The Dear One--
